Thermal Imaging Benefits Chiller Plants

August 2011

Thermal imaging may seem like a passing fad, but its uses are far reaching and provide long-term benefits. In fact, thermal imaging can provide significant benefits for chiller plants.

Level II Certified Thermographer Mike Spaulding, who has used thermal imaging facilities in the Midwest and East Coast, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, states, "Regular thermal imaging on equipment can help facilities spot potential problems before serious damage occurs."

In the case of chiller plants, Mike explains the following ways in which thermal imaging can help protect the equipment: "Thermal imaging can ensure that glycol is not leaking behind insulation from either the supply or the return piping; compressors are running within manufacturer temperature specification; and any associated motors are running within manufacturer maximum temperatures."
