Chaplain's Corner: Rest for the Weary

March 2018

We live in a nation where many people are sleep deprived. We have probably seen on the news that doctors say that millions of people are not getting enough sleep. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control estimates that a third of US adults do not get enough sleep at night and that this is linked to many chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression. Perhaps some of us are experiencing these things or are walking through life in a daze – living but not truly enjoying life. It is to people like this-to us-that Jesus makes the following invitation: "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

One of the most discouraging and depressing places to be is not just tired, but tired and alone at the same time, even when there are other people around us. Many of us have been at that place at one time or another in our lives. Perhaps this is where you are right now – feeling overwhelmed by life and circumstances. When we are in this situation, Jesus comes to us and invites us to come to Him.

You see, we were not meant to live life without God. When we try to do that, we end up feeling tired and burdened by life. However, if we will come to Jesus and ask Him to forgive us for trying to live life without Him, He will come to us. And He will teach us the way to live life with Him so that we can experience rest – rest in our hearts and in our souls.
